The Arma 3 mod is titled Operation Trebuchet, and is based around the period before humanity made contact with the Covenant. Instead of placing players in the boots of Spartan soldiers, the mod will instead focus on Marines, which the developers hope will show a more brutal side of the Halo universe than what has been seen in the past.
For players that are hungering for grounded Spartan combat, the team is also working on First Contact, an expansion for the Operation Trebuchet mod that follows the story of the UNSC’s first encounters with the Covenant. The Arma 3 mod’s developers do warn, however, that First Contact will take longer to develop and is mostly a fan service side project. However, major bugs and other glaring issues should be taken care of quickly. Both projects are currently in their alpha phases, so players shouldn’t expect a completely polished experience quite yet.
The mod is being developed under Microsoft’s “Game Content Usage Rules”, which should keep the project from being pulled down for legal reasons, so long as the developer doesn’t try to monetize the mod. This is an issue that has been a concern for things like the Ocarina of Time fan remake.
Needless to say, the mod looks great. It should be a neat experience for any Halo fans with a gaming PC, especially those anticipating more information about Halo Infinite, the next entry in the franchise. Hopefully, the Arma 3 mod team is able to expand on the idea even further and include other aspects of the Halo mythos. The series has a massive amount of lore, so there are certainly a ton of different things the team could do in the future.
Alpha versions of Arma 3’s Operation Trebuchet and First Contact are available now on the Steam Workshop.
