Along with being incredibly written, Kawaki is also a very intriguing character, mostly because his character progression has been incredible to witness. Although he appears to be a character good at heart, Kawaki ends up fighting Boruto Uzumaki, as seen during the prologue of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. While very little has been revealed about this development so far, fans know that Kawaki and Boruto are destined to face-off, however, the reason might not be what most think.

To understand why Kawaki and Boruto Uzumaki fight each other, fans need to look at how the relationship between the two has developed over the years. Much like Naruto and Sasuke, Kawaki and Boruto didn’t get off to the best of starts. Kawaki’s rude behavior was something Boruto couldn’t stand initially and his disregard for the feelings of those around him, such as the likes of Himawari, certainly made things worse for them. At the same time, Boruto failed to understand that the abuse that Kawaki had to endure shaped him to be the person that he was and that healing would take time for him.

Thanks to the Seventh Hokage, Naruto Uzumaki, and the incredible love and care that he showed to Kawaki, he started to open his heart to those around him. Not only did he accept Naruto as his father but, at the same time, opened his heart to the rest of the Uzumaki family as well. Kawaki and Boruto’s relationship developed as the two spent most of their time together, ate together, trained together, and most importantly, wanted to get rid of the Karma together. Through the several battles that they fought, Kawaki and Boruto grew extremely close to each other to the where they call each other brothers.

Boruto wouldn’t think twice before risking his life for Kawaki and this feeling is certainly reciprocated by Kawaki as well. Despite everything, the fact is that Kawaki and Boruto eventually end up on opposing ends, which is rather strange. However, there is certainly more to it than meets the eye and it is possible that Kawaki had nothing to do with Konoha’s eventual destruction.

In the prologue of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, fans see Konohagakure completely destroyed with no signs of either Naruto Uzumaki or Sasuke Uchiha around. Atop the Hokage faces, Boruto Uzumaki fights Kawaki as they have a difference of opinion. While it is true that the two end up fighting, the reason for it could very well be different from what many assume to be. Having seen Kawaki’s growth as a character and the incredible amount of love and respect that he has for Naruto Uzumaki, it is impossible for him to turn against his benefactor or to harm him.

At the end of the day, unless Kawaki is somehow manipulated, him destroying Konoha just for the sake of it seems unlikely. Fans know that whatever happens, Kawaki is good at heart and his only motivation in life is to protect Naruto Uzumaki with all his might. When Kawaki talks about sending Boruto Uzumaki to the same place as Naruto, it is possible that, using a space-time ninjutsu, Kawaki has transported him to a different dimension for his own good. As the Hokage of the village, Naruto wants to protect everyone dear to him, however, he doesn’t have to strength to do it anymore after Kurama’s death. Kawaki might have sent him to a different dimension against his will.

At the same time, Kawaki’s philosophy of protecting what’s important likely differs from the one that Boruto Uzumaki and the shinobi world hold. It is entirely possible that it is this very difference of opinion that leads the two clashing atop the Hokage faces. Konoha’s destruction is likely due to an external force, such as a member of the Kara, like Code, or maybe someone even stronger, such as the Otsutsuki Clan members.

Despite everything, Boruto Uzumaki and Kawaki are destined to clash amidst a destroyed Konoha village. Fans don’t know why it happens or who emerges as the victor. As the story slowly builds towards the fateful encounter, fans will get to see Kawaki’s character make progress and understand better as to why he opposes Boruto Uzumaki eventually. Nonetheless, Kawaki’s importance to the plot and his role as Boruto’s brother and Naruto’s son means that, no matter what, he will be redeemed at the end of the day.
