The Fast and Furious team has been in talks with Momoa to be in the franchise’s next installment. Momoa, who is best known these days for playing the superhero Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe, would bring a magnetic presence to the next film not just because of how popular he is as an actor, but because of both his charisma and his status as a beefcake.

While nothing is set in stone as of now, The Hollywood Reporter has learned Momoa is in final negotiations to star in the franchise’s next installment as the main villain of the story if he is officially signed on. Given that Momoa has proven through his charm and his build that he can attract a massive audience in years past, this would be a welcome addition to a popular franchise that has managed to stay relevant in spite of relying on the same gimmick for two decades now. This should also prove to be quite a change of pace for Momoa acting-wise.

Since his most well-known role by far in Hollywood is playing a superhero, playing a villain this time could be quite the test for him as an actor. Granted, he would potentially be playing a one-time antagonist in Fast and Furious 10, but seeing him explore a completely different avenue acting-wise is something both he and his fans should be very intrigued by. We’ve seen big-time actors who were regularly cast as the heroes in their previous movies get even more recognition for going against their archetype by playing the antagonist down the road.

Take Denzel Washington for example. Washington was already an acting powerhouse before he played Alonzo Harris, the villain in Training Day in 2001. Not only did the role further build his reputation as one of the acting greats, but his performance earned him an Academy Award for Best Actor. Momoa is nowhere near the acting giant that Washington is, and he probably never will be. However, should he take this role, it could convince Hollywood that he can do more with his acting chops than play a popular superhero.

If all goes right, bringing in Momoa could elevate the Fast and Furious franchise to heights its never seen before. At the same time, bringing in a popular actor who hasn’t played a villainous role before could badly hurt the franchise if he demonstrates that he’s way out of his depth. Since it has managed to keep its fanbase invested for as long as it has, the Fast and Furious franchise has illustrated time and time again that it knows what its doing. Whether casting Momoa as the next villain works out or not, it’s abundantly clear that the franchise is still swinging for the fences as it always has.

Fast and Furious 10 is scheduled to be released on May 19th, 2023.
